Vidushi. Sukanya Ramgopal Akka, India’s first woman ghatam player is among the best-known percussionists in India today. She is heading an all-woman instrumental ensemble started in the year 1995, the Sthree Thaal Tharang features the ghatam, violin, flute, morsing and mridangam. A well-trained, senior & experienced Carnatic Classical Percussionist as well as music composer ... she is also sought after for her effervescent multi-ghatam tarang performances. Talent and expertise transcend gender preferences; ghatam, hitherto considered as an upa pakkavadyam, occupied centre stage literally and figuratively. Thanks to Sukanya Ramgopal Akka and her all-woman team! The team has proved that percussion is no longer to be considered a male bastion. Vidushi. Sukanya Ramgopal played the ghata tarang - with six ghatams. Her mastery over the instrument is simply awe-inspiring! Sukanya Akkas konnakol was again simply out of the world. Vidushi. Soumya Ramachandran on violin, Vidushi. Lakshmi Pillai on Mrudangam, Vidushi.Vani Manjunath on Flute & Vidushi. Bhagyalakshmi M. Krishna on Morsing performed brilliantly. All talented musicians in their own right and when they play together there is a delightful exuberance and a magical charm. The amount of energy and enthusiasm that this this ensemble exudes is something phenomenal. The intensity and laya brilliance that they demonstrated captivated me. This concert at Perumchellur Sangeetha Sabha...that too on March 8th - International womens day...was certainly different and hats off to the entire women artistes who were all good. One needs to see it to believe!!! It’s a concert that will remain in memory for a very long time.....
